Phil, I'm not sure of the exact details, but I think this whole thing was started by a fight that happened a while back between 2 groups of students. A rumor got started of a possible riot on this particular Friday (I THINK through several MySpace accounts), and it snowballed. One group was going to get back at the other by "shooting them." Parents (& students alike) panicked & kept their kids home from school that day. Rumors flew that the police had been notified prior, so the school was on lockdown that day & swarming with police. The kids that DID show up for school were sent home, and someone at work just told me that there were 4 students at school that day caught with guns. According to the article in NOLA, NONE of that is true, so not really sure what to believe. If anyone else knows of any details, please post.
